If you’ve ever dreamt of instantly transforming your hair, hair extensions might be the answer. Let’s face it EVERYONE wears some sort of hair enhancements. (It’s the beauty industry’s biggest secret) These versatile beauty tools come in various types, each with its own unique characteristics. Let’s dive into the world of hair extensions and explore the key differences among them.
1. Clip-In Hair Extensions:
Installation: Clip-in extensions are the most user-friendly option. They come with clips attached to the wefts, allowing you to easily attach and remove them without professional help.
Versatility: Ideal for occasional use or special occasions, clip-in extensions offer versatility and convenience.
Maintenance: With proper care, clip-ins can last a long time. Regular washing and storing them properly are essential for their longevity. Most extension hair is heavily treated with silicones and as it is worn the hair can get stiff and hard to style.
Cons: Many people order colors online and although they may be in love with the color, it’s often not the right color and ends up looking really fake.
Pro Tip: Consult with a beauty pro and get them to match up the color. Extensions can be colored to blend seamlessly. Clip in’s don’t need to be wash and styled often unless there’s a ton of product buildup. (My product recommendations are at the end of this post)
2. Tape-In Hair Extensions:
Installation: Tape-in extensions involve applying pre-taped wefts to your natural hair. Professional installation is recommended for a seamless look.
Comfort: Tape-ins are lightweight and lay flat against the head, making them comfortable for everyday wear.
Maintenance: They require regular maintenance appointments to adjust the tape and ensure they stay in place, which can get costly.
Cons: On weak or fine hair, tape-ins, can be very damaging. It’s typically the removal process that I’ve seen to shred the hair. The adhesive holds too well and as the remover is applied to the tape and pulled apart, weak hair can break. Although the tape lies nicely when the hair is worn down, It’s tough to make a ponytail look great. The hair at the scalp looks lumpy.
Pro Tip: I would save up and have keratin bonded extensions. The cost ends up being about the same without the maintenance or worries about the damage caused by the tape removal.
3. Sew-In or Weave Hair Extensions:
Installation: Sew-in extensions are braided into your natural hair, creating a secure and long-lasting attachment. This method is typically done by a professional stylist.
Durability: Sew-ins can withstand rigorous activities and are an excellent choice for those with active lifestyles.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is necessary to prevent tangling and maintain the integrity of your natural hair.
Cons: Traction alopecia, hair loss caused by prolonged tension on the hair follicle, and can sometimes be permanent.
Pro Tip: Sew-In’s have come a long way since I did them. I suggest seeing someone that really knows what they’re doing. If you do opt to have these hair extensions in, give your scalp (hair follicles) a break and abstain from them every few months.
4. Micro-Link (Micro-Bead) Hair Extensions:
Installation: Micro-link extensions involve attaching small, silicone-lined beads to your natural hair. This method is semi-permanent and requires professional installation.
Flexibility: Micro-link extensions offer flexibility in terms of movement and styling. They blend seamlessly with your natural hair.
Maintenance: Regular adjustments are needed to move the beads closer to the scalp as your natural hair grows.
Cons: The metal beads can oxidize and it causes rust at the bead site. The hair added is usually too dense for the person’s hair. Although it doesn’t seem like much weight, it can also cause traction alopecia.
Pro Tip: If you have fine or weak hair, ask your stylist to adjust the application so your hair can support the added hair.
5. Fusion (Pre-Bonded) Hair Extensions:
Installation: Fusion extensions use a heat-activated keratin bond to attach the extensions to your natural hair strands. This method requires professional installation.
Natural Look: Fusion extensions provide a natural look, with the bonds being virtually undetectable when properly applied.
Maintenance: Maintenance appointments are necessary for upkeep, and removal should also be done by a professional.
Cons: Cost. They are pricey but the lack of salon maintenance is well worth it.
Pro Tip: Bonded extensions are by far my favorite. I have the ultimate control over the color and density for clients, individually. This type of extension is virtually undetectable.
6. Halo Hair Extensions:
Installation: Halo extensions are a one-piece design that sits on top of your head, with a clear wire to secure it. Think of a clear string headband with hair that sits at the nape of your head. They are easy to put on yourself.
Comfort: Halos are comfortable to wear and don’t put stress on your natural hair.
Versatility: You can quickly remove and reattach halo extensions as needed.
Cons: After wearing them for a while, I typically wore mine at work for about 12 hours, the top of my head aches a little bit and the wire leaves an indent. Both issues subside by the next morning. I knew someone who wore hers so much and for so long it caused alopecia where the wire sat, at the top of her head.
Pro Tip: I recommend securing the halo at the sides with crisscrossed Bobby pins. It helps prevent the halo from shifting and relieves a little tension where the wire sits.
Choosing the Right Extension Type:
Selecting the right hair extension type depends on your hair goals, lifestyle, and budget. Clip-ins and halos are great for occasional use and offer ease of application. For a semi-permanent option, I would recommend the keratin bonded extensions. They offer the most natural looking and feeling solution. I always pre-blend the bonds which gives a seamless look.
Ultimately, the key to successful hair extensions lies in proper installation and maintenance, regardless of the type you choose. Consult with a professional stylist to determine the best option for your hair and lifestyle, and enjoy the instant transformation hair extensions can offer.
My product recommendations to keep your extension hair soft and supple. It can be used on your own hair but if it seems too heavy DM me on IG and I’ll make recommendations for your specific hair and scalp needs!
Shampoo This low lather shampoo will ensure to prevent stripping of the hair, making the extensions last longer. Leave it on for a few minutes to ensure it penetrates.
Masque This masque is my absolute favorite! It turns your hair into butta’ without weighing it down. I leave this on for at least 2 minutes to maximize the softness.
Softening cream I LOVE this split end mender! It also turns the hair into butta’ without weighing it down. I’ve forgotten to put conditioner in my hair, because I was in a rush, and a few pumps of this in my hair before I brushed it out was magical!
Blowout cream Hands down THE BEST blowout cream I’ve used in my 28 years of using products professionally. It’s super concentrated so make sure not to use too much. The slip and shine this product provides is stellar.
Workable hairspray I’ve never been a fan of hairspray but this sold me at the first use. It gives the perfect amount of hold and the shine is insane! It’s almost like my hair glows from the inside!
